PM 10 Minutes #11 – Developing Project Competence in a Complex World

The PM Forum 2011 focussess on project success based on competence. Keynote speaker Ed Hoffman, director of the NASA Academy of Program/Project & Engineering Leadership discusses with me about project competence in this episode of PM 10 Minutes.

The PM Forum is the leading project management event in Germany and PM 10 Minutes is part of the media cooperation between the Forum and this blog.

The three key takeaways for Ed Hoffman are:

  1. We live in a complex world that is increasingly based on projects and programs
  2. Performance happens at a team level
  3. Having the right information and competency for projects is a key success factor

NASA invested a long time in the development of project management as all work at NASA is based on projects. The NASA Academy of Program/Project / Engineering Leadership plays a key role with its goal to provide support to the development of individuals and teams and enable people to respond to challenges before they happen.

Especially at NASA, key success factors for projects relate to performance, cost, schedule and international partnerships. And although some spectacular failures happened at NASA in the past, the organization especially learns from successful projects and programs. These learnings are included into training programs, they support teams in missions and are strengthened by the knowledge services area at NASA. But to become part of standards and policies, NASA invests a lot of time to find out why something is working and to identify consistent success factors.

And now have fun with this extraordinatry interview partner.
