Scrum Pattern: Timebox

ContextThe Development Team is in a Sprint and it is clear, that not all Sprint Backlog Items (SBIs) can be implemented.
ProblemShould the Sprint be extended to realize all SBIs?

In many cases the Development Team will be asked to extend the Sprint to implement all Sprint Backlog Items. However, when the Timebox is extended, the status of the Sprint and therefore the status of the Project becomes unclear.

Forcestoo little/too much sticking to a plan
SolutionContinue to work within the timebox or kill the Sprint.

When a Sprint is planned, the Sprint Goal is agreed by the Product Owner and the Development Team. It reflects a minimum goal to enable the Product Owner to immediately end a Sprint, of the Sprint Goal cannot be reached anymore. That way a certain amount of the work done in the Sprint is lost. After considering options, the Product Owner can either kill the Sprint or ask the Development Team to continue. That way there is a maximum of transparency while acting on issues as soon as possible.

Resulting ContextThe Sprint will continue within its Timebox or the Product Owner kills it and a new Sprint is started.
