The Scrum Pattern Repository starts now

As promised long ago, today the Scrum Patterns are launched on beyond-scrum.de as part of this blog. The chosen language is english as the patterns are groundwork reaching out to international readers.

The definition of what Scrum is has been laid down in the Scrum Guide by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland. This guide is updated regularly to reflect the continuing advancement in the field of agile software development. Whereas the Scrum Guide is a good introduction, it cannot be used directly to convince management of Scrum or to analyse “how much” of Scrum has been introduced in an organization.

The Scrum Patterns on the other hand offer a structure to communicate what Scrum is about and what challenges it solves easily. Futhermore the pattern languages (LINK) form catalogues of patterns which can be used for an assessment of the maturity of Scrum in an organization.

The pattern languages used here cover the Scrum Guide, Enterprise Scrum and Advanced Enterprise Scrum. The Scrum Guides focusses on single Scrum teams, Enterprise Scrum shows how to apply Scrum to multiple teams and Advanced Enterprise Scrum combines the latest knowledge and best practices of more areas than just development with Scrum to transform an enterprise to improve productivity and quality beyond Scrum. Advanced Enterprise Scrum is the final step leading to an organization strengthened by economic democracy principles.

Every organization can be located somewhere between the most easily implemented Scrum Patterns and the realization of all three pattern languages. To get a quick start, read my presentation on Advanced Enterprise Scrum Patterns.

So enjoy the Scrum Pattern Respository now.

The idea to publish these Scrum Patterns has been inspired by the ground work laid by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson and John M. Vlissides in Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software. The Scrum Pattern Community currently works in a similar direction with the goal to publish a pattern book sometime in the future.
